WHEEL CYLINDER

A Wheel Cylinder is a part of the modern hydraulic drum brake system.

It is positioned at every wheel and is activated whenever the brake pedal is depressed, where it extends a piston to press the Brake Shoe against the brake drum in order to slow down the vehicle via friction.

The Wheel Cylinder tends to wear and leak fluid over time and will result in poor brake performance.

What are the symptoms of a bad Wheel Cylinder?

A leaking Wheel Cylinder will make the brake pedal feel “soft” upon depressed. This is due to the extension piston losing pressure as it is being activated. Be alert to unresponsive brake effects.

Look out for any leaks or drips from the Wheel Cylinder. A huge puddle of leak indicates a serious wear and that the brake function has already been compromised.
