The function of a Universal Joint in a car, a.k.a Coupling, is to allow shafts to move in an up & down motion along with the suspensions so that power can still be passed on to the wheels even though the drive shaft is not aligned in a straight line between the transmission and drive wheels.
What are the symptoms of a bad Universal Joint?
On rear wheel drive vehicles, listen out for a metal-like knocking sound when a gear is being engaged or upon acceleration/deceleration. If a visual check is possible, look out for rust colours where the joint is.
