The camshaft in a car is a shaft in the engine which rotates and activates the Intake and Exhaust Valves for each cylinder.

The camshaft is designed with several lobes which, as the camshaft rotates, press on every spring loaded valves in a synchronised motion involving the Pistons and ignition of the Spark Plugs. An engine may have one camshaft to operate on all valves or separate shafts for the Intake and Exhaust Valves.

What are signs of a camshaft failure?

Look out for symptoms such as the car idling roughly, stalling frequently or experiencing reduced power. The Engine symbol on the dashboard might come on. In a worst of situation, the car will fail to even start.
