THERMOSTAT

The function of a car Thermostat is to prevent the engine from overheating. It regulates the amount of coolant entering the radiator to be cooled before recirculation into  the engine. It works via a valve which opens and closes at intervals. This procedure maintains the coolant at an optimal temperature range in the engine for an efficient performance.

Look out for symptoms of a Thermostat failure.

The temperature gauge on the dashboard will display the high red zone within minutes of the engine running. Or it may fluctuate erratically between extreme low and high levels. The engine will also produce an evident poor performance.

Do a visual check of the engine area and the ground below the engine. Look out for signs of leaking coolant around the Thermostat and on the ground below it. It is likely caused by the Thermostat stuck closed, obstructing the coolant’s flow and circulation.
