TENSIONER

A Timing Belt Tensioner in a car keeps the tension on the Timing Belts or Engine Belts as they wind around pulleys that drive various engine components such as the alternator etc. As such, a faulty Belt Tensioner will directly affect the functionality of the engine.

What are the symptoms of a bad Belt Tensioner?

A common symptom of the Belt Tensioner failing is a squealing sound produced from the Timing Belt upon running of the engine.

Look out for any unusual wear inflicted on the Timing Belt. In severe cases, the wear will eventually break the timing belt. In this case, components which are driven by the Timing Belt will fail to function altogether, such as the alternator, water pump or air conditioning compressor.
